This'll be brief since things have been busy and will continue to be busy for the rest of the night, but I just had to share how RIDICULOUS tonight has been.
First, there was a slide from a sick baby that had the most ambiguous cells I've seen in a long time. My impulse would have been to type them as granular immature monocytes but there were just enough granules that they might be sparsely granuled metacytes. The histogram supported them being metacytes but it was a mess to begin with because of the reactive lymphs and NRBCs. Yeah, I'm glad Jeralyn diffed that one...
Then Scott had a positive blood culture that had been labeled as two different patients. Treatment asap is important so you can imagine the frustration as Rob, Jeralyn, and Scott tried to determine whether the phlebotomist or the microbiologist had incorrectly labeled the bottle. I, on the other hand, was trying to keep all the ER stats going so that they'd have time to figure out what happened.
Then there was the spermy urine. 4+ sperm... Yuck. Semen Analysis happens during DAY shift (another reason why I love working nights). Next time, dear patient, save that for them next time.
Well, at least we had pizza tonight. Yummm...
Slides off the slide maker. Thats all for now. I need to keep hacking away at my SOPs in my free time anyways. : P
