Nicknames

For a name as short as Jill, I've accumulated a lot of nicknames. I'm now going to take a brief moment to see if I can actually figure out how many I really have.

Jillypie- Dad and mom started using it since before I can remember. Cutiepie was a variation.
Jillbert- 7th grade. Friend's little sister gave it to me after a sleepover. Its among the more popular of my nicknames.
Jilly- Sarah from highschool always called me this.
Jillybean- Laura calls me this all the time.
Jillbird- Variation of Jillbert used by Deseret.
Ninjill- Eric gave this one to me after watching me do martial arts in the grassy knoll.
Jillgamesh- Nathan gave me this nickname after reading the the epic tale of Gilgamesh.
Jilloedopolis- Brandon from my freshman ward came up with that one but I think he used it oh... 3 times ever.
Jillette- Scott is responsible for this one after Gillette razors "The best a man can get."
Ji- This one lasts only as long as the conversation of "Its ironic that none of my nicknames are shorter than my full name.
Jillikins- Sister Jessica is fond of this one.
Jillipoo- Coworker Cat calls me this.
Jingle Jill- Past coworker Jan called me this when she realized I sing a lot at work.
Jillian- People call me this when they try to sound parental.

Some that could work but haven't ever been used.

JC- Jill Christine. I don't think it suits me like the others but hey, it could work.
LumberJill- I could see me in the plaid cutting down trees but I guess most others don't so... never caught on.
Schubox- Ironically none of my nicknames orient around my last name. Schuler doesn't seem to fit me too well either but I could see Schubox being passable.

Can you think of any I'm missing. Well, this is me signing out.

Dr. Watson and the Haunted Biohazard Shack

Most of you remember my post depicting my trip to the morgue( If you don't, see http://jillschuler.blogspot.com/2011/10/morgue.html ). The morgue, however, is not the only creepy place I've encountered during my Med Tech Career. Its time to introduce you to:

The Biohazard Waste Disposal Shed.

Lets take a tour, shall we. Mayo Clinic Hospital Arizona is a beautiful facility on the desert-scape, focused on developing the latest in technology. One such development is our soon to be constructed proton beam. This beam will need to be buried 6 stories below ground level. As a result, you walk to the back of the hospital and there's this giant, desolate looking crater. Right at the edge of this crater is a huge chain link fence at least two stories tall. Its covered with a dark green fabric and locks and chains. There are two signs on the entrance; one says DANGER and the other says PELIGRO. You almost expect to see barbed wire and pit bulls as you wait for security to come unlock the main gate. You see, biohazard waste disposal is a dangerous activity. Not as dangerous as say insulting Chuck Norris, poking a sleeping grizzly or milking a rattle snake, but dangerous none the less.

You approach a metal shack with even more danger signs, biohazard symbols, NFPA chemical hazard diamonds, etc. There's a light switch on the outside of the building that you MUST remember to flip on and you MUST remember not to shut the door behind you. You see, the door will automatically lock and then you'll be trapped in the shack with barrels of hazardous waste. One lady got locked in there for an hour before she was rescued. True, after the incident they installed a phone and set up a buddy system but it would still be a long wait if you didn't remember to turn the lights on before entering and then you're stuck waiting in the dark.

Do you believe in ghosts? There is a ghost who I believe haunts our hospital. His name is Dr. Watson. Sometimes I'll be entering results into our new computer program and things will freeze up, automatically shut down, and then a little window will open up stating some jargon about Dr. Watson... I am convinced that since all the doctors and their staff are far too clever to be ordering patients incorrectly, that Dr. Watson must be infiltrating the system as a poltergiest. He's like the Harry Potter's Jeeves character of the hospital. If anything goes wrong with any laboratory procedures or with any computer system, Dr. Watson is to blame.

So I am convinced that if I was ever to get locked in the biohazard shed alone that Dr. Watson would unleash his full wrath. I'd put on my face shield, lab coat, gloves, apron, etc. but that would only do so much if those barrels exploded and then something would happen like....

THIS!!!

or like THIS!!!

But most likely THIS since the main chemical in those bins is methanol which is highly flammable.... The whole Two Face thing would probably only be the result of acid waste and the whole Alex Mack thing the result of radioactive chemicals.

Moral of the story:

Jill will not dispose of Biohazard Waste alone... EVER!!!

Why Dating is Complicated

Sometimes I feel dating should be a lot more simple than it really is. I know the sorts of things I'm looking for in a guy. Why can't dating be as easy as taking a trip to the local Chick-Fil-A Drive Thru?

"I'll have a Good Churchy Man sandwich with no mustache, a Tall, Dark, and Handsome, not diet, and ohh.... How about a side of Humor with lots and LOTS of Adventurous Nerdy sauce."

MMMMmmmmmm Delicious.

Well, last night I was talking to a new friend who reminded me of this theory I had toyed around with about a month ago. Lucky you, friend reader, here's a blog post all about it.

We tell people the sort of person we're looking for in a potential significant other and, most of the time, the answers we share are all about the same. You may think we all just want the same things but then we'd all be attracted to the same people so no, that's not it. We're just not being specific enough. You say you want a man who is smart. All right, what kind of smart? You have street smart, book smart, people smart, etc. In addition to this there is a whole scale that goes along with each category. Nobody is all smart or all stupid. There's a spectrum and each of us lands somewhere in between both extremes.

So, when you say you'd like to marry someone smart, everyone has a different image of that kind of smart is and the degree of smartness. You may be thinking Harvard PHD in Quantum Mechanics and she may be thinking you tell him something once and he won't forget it an hour later.

Then lets consider the dynamics of character. Most of us are not so volatile that we'll become someone completely different out of the blue but we are all still constantly changing, developing into someone new, for better or for worse. The people we consider dating are likewise changing so not only do we have to consider where they seem to rank in each of these subcategories but consider if they're planned life projectory is, for the most part, compatible with your projectory. Yep... dating is complicated

And this friends is why I'm grateful for personal revelation. As much as I love strategy, the dating game sometimes feels like a 6 hour game of Risk that just refuses to end. I'm usually tempted to forfeit after hour 3. However, knowing that God has things set up so that I will be a winner at some point, so long as I play the game right, makes everything totally worth it. So here I am Dating World! I will conquer you!!! Red cannon strikes Brazil!!! Mwa ha ha ha!!!!!!

Kissing in the Rain

Don't you just love the rain. I find a good rain storm entirely liberating and magical. That's why I have bucket list item #80. Since its raining outside right now I thought I'd explore why I feel this sort of experience is necessary for my life to be truly complete.

It might be because so many films portray it as extremely romantic. I've already posted Zoobi Doobi but I'm posting it again because I like it that much.

Another prime example. Book is better but this clip embodies the general feel. I love the whole two people under one umbrella strolling in the rain idea.

But my attraction to rain emerged long before my exposure to these films. As a kid I'd go race out into the storm and wallop and dance around. It felt good to be wet and wild with the plants a more vibrant green, the world full of pitter pattering noises, the energy of it all. I'd chase my siblings, roll in the grass, jump in the puddles. My neighbors probably thought my parents were crazy letting us scamper about like heathens but we loved it.

Afterwards we'd all have to clean up well since my mom didn't want to get grass everywhere but after a hot shower I'd curl up with a blanket and fall asleep. Sometimes dad would read to us from a book and it would seem all the more peaceful with the hushed drip droppings going on outside.

As I got older, most of my siblings grew out of their need for the storm but I have not. The second I hear the thunder and hear the rain roaring it takes considerable effort to refrain from racing out the door, twirling about, and hunting for puddles. I have plenty of evidence... Well, not tons since getting my camera soaked would be unfortunate but I have plenty of friends to witness I'm still passionate about frolicking in the rain.

This dream may seem silly to some. I suppose I could hunt down any ol' bloke and snog him in a drizzle and check #80. Its supposed to be more though. I want all of the happy, clean, silly, energetic, whimsical bliss I feel in a good storm to be in a relationship with the right guy and for a perfect expression of all of our feelings to take place in a rainstorm sealed with the perfect kiss.

I think I'm turning into a hopeless romantic in my old age. If it weren't Sunday I'd have to go cleanse my palate with a good action film or something... Bah!

Actively Fighting Pessimism

I've been feeling kind of worn down as of late so in an effort to keep myself motivated, I'm going to right down the first thirty things that pop into my head about things in my life that are really awesome.

1. I'm going to Guatemala in a month. I'll get to go scuba diving in the ocean and do medical testing for future missionaries.
2. I have a garden in my backyard. Sure, my plants are struggling, but I can buy new dirt and seeds and my radishes were sickly before I planted them outside and they aren't my favorite anyways.
3. I am 5'2". All of the tall girls can be envious of my ability to dance with all of the short men with moves.
4. I inherited fabric which I'm turning into a quilt and it's looking nice. I'm glad quilting is significantly more fun than reading books about quilters.
5. Ridiculously cute moose puppet my friend Deseret gave me.
6. Pie. I still have apple pie in the fridge. It won a medal at FHE last night so its a VERY good pie. Pi day is a good thing to celebrate.
7. I have my own home and don't have to play the vagabond anymore.
8. I'm going to dance this weekend and I'm excited about it.
9. I still have movie passes. I might get myself up and go see the Lorax or something just because I can.
10. I love the smell of citrus blossoms and they are in full bloom EVERYWHERE right now.
11. I have a nice sewing machine that threads the needle. It's one of the coolest adult toys I own.
12. I have a great home teacher that let me break into his house so I could borrow his power drill.
13. I live close to the temple. It's further than Provo's was but its still close enough for me to go about one a week or every other week.
14. People don't mind that I sing at work all of the time.
15. I save lives for a living.
16. I have an awesome family.
17. I have the internet. My need to know everything is fed when I can google search questions like "How does one make homemade marshmallows?"
18. I have a healthy body. I can run and dance and hike mountains.
19. Carpet. I love the fact that homes in our day and age have clean, soft carpets instead of hard dirt floors.
20. I have friends who like to visit me and invite me to do stuff.
21. I have glow sticks.
22. I have money so I can afford to buy more glowsticks.
23. I can live by myself and feel safe. Not every country has deadbolts, the right to bare arms, or a reliable police department.
24. I live in a relatively parasite free environment. I don't have to worry about tape worms or hook worms or malaria or stuff like that.
25. I had the chance to get a good education.
26. I have access to a library. I can watch all sorts of movies and read all sorts of books for FREE!
27. I am a little bit crazy sometimes but people love me anyways.
28. Harry Potter. Those are good books.
29. Sunshine. I love the sunshine.
30. The Gospel of Jesus Christ because it helps me keep my life in perspective.

Okay, now I'm going to go finish my errands. I just wanted to take a moment to cleanse myself from the negativity from work being messy, my house being messy, my car being messy, my dating life messy, etc. My life is good.

Myer-Briggs

Recently I spent the day with a good friend and one of the subjects that came up time and time again is the Myer-Briggs personality test. For those of you who know nothing about it, here is a quick summary about the basics.

Extroverted v. Introverted- When you are feeling drained from a long day are you more likely to try to spend time with people or alone to recharge. If you're an E you get your energy from being around other people and if you are an I, you feel most at peace in solitary moments.

Sensing v. iNtuitive- When you look at the world, do you prefer to see the straight facts of exactly what is or do you like do dwell on ideas, concepts, and what could be. S's are more likely to live in the here and now while N's get caught up on dreams of the future, ideals, and theories.

Thinking v. Feeling- When you have a hard decision, are you more often swayed by logic or emotions. T's will think through things and suppress the gut feelings while F's will have a hard time sticking to the most logical choice when they are emotionally invested.

Judging v. Perceiving- When you have decisions to make, do you prefer to make them early and plan things out or take things as they come. J's like to keep schedules and narrow down the options while P's like to keep their options open and take life as it comes.

I feel like understanding Myer Briggs has helped me understand some things about myself.

1. I can only handle so much P. Some have mistaken me for a P in the past since I can seem at times rather impulsive. However, the majority of those seemingly random impulses are fully weighed out F based decisions. These side plans are 99% of the time vetoed if they hinder my ability to accomplish Plan A. Without that sort of structure I become restless, unproductive, and frustrated. When I ask a strong P about making plans and they respond with something like "I dunno, whenever?" it kind of drives me crazy.

2. I need to eventually marry someone who is some variety of N. The nerd in me needs quality conversation about theories on how the world works, why people behave the way they do, bucket lists, etc. S's more often than not respond to me with some form of "Oh, that's cute". I don't want to be just cute for seeing the world as I do. I want to be with a fellow dreamer so the two of us can reach our hopes and dreams, explore the world, and conquer it together.

3. I am not as extreme of an E as I once thought I was. I have always had SOME I moments but as of late I've been having more of them, things like sewing projects, painting, writing, eating by myself at lunch, etc. and I don't know if I'd opt to have someone else join me in every situation like I would have claimed in the past. Maybe its coming with old age or from being on my own for so long... I guess its all good so long as I keep a balance of sorts.

Abraham Lincoln

I've been kind of amazed with all of the great books they've been planning to turn into movies as of late.

First you have the Hobbit which comes out in December which will be wonderful since I love Peter Jackson and the LOTR movies. I'm pretty determined to show up to that one in costume since I didn't get to do that in high school for any of the other films, much to my teenage displeasure. Here's the preview if you haven't seen it yet.

Then there is Les Miserables starring Hugh Jackman. In case you weren't aware, in addition to being extremely handsome that man has an AMAZING voice. There was that time I stumbled upon him starring in Oklahoma. That was a good day. The only con to this film I've discovered so far is that Ann Hathaway will play Fauntine but considering she dies during the first half of the movie, I think I can deal with it. Here's Hugh Jackman singing. Start at about 0:50

But those movies aren't what this blog post is about. This was the cherry on the cake where I went "REALLY?!?" All these good books into movies in half a year?!?

That's right. They're coming out with a movie for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. I confess I rather enjoyed the book but kind of in a guilty way. I thought it would be at least a little educational, a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies kind of a novel, but I don't feel like I learned a whole lot. It might have felt a little educational if it had had the book club discussion like P&P&Z did.

But this preview made me remember how I want to still learn more about Abraham Lincoln. He's the sort of man I could go for I think go for. Honest, Tall, well dressed, good heart, doesn't like vampires... I think I could learn a lot from him. My new project for myself is to learn more about Abe Lincoln from a source other than Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter before the movie comes out.

Alarm

I forgot to turn my alarm clock off last night so I'm unfortunately awake before 9am. There is something unsatisfying about waking up too early, especially to a cell phone alarm... I think I ought to consider investing in a new alarm. I probably won't act on a whim and get any of these but there's no denying they're pretty cool.

It would be much more tempting to get out of bed if I knew I'd get bacon out of the deal.

I'm not a particularly violent person when wake up. I just like to shoot things in general.

Since I can't wake up to the voice of a spouse whispering sweet nothings in my ear maybe a voice like this would be a good alternative.

This one mimics the lighting of a sunrise although it looks more like something out of Avatar. Although speaking of sunrises, this makes me think of that time when Mailee was my roommate and I got to wake up to this song blaring.

I love Mailee, but she did like to hit the snooze button so I got tired of the "YAAAAA SVENYAAAAA ABAGEEEZEEE GAMOOOOOO" but looking back now, it isn't a bad song to wake up to. Well... enough of this. I'm going to go back to bed just for a little bit. So much for a productive morning.
