Hair cuts and lassoing the moon

I got my hair cut today. There's a slight A line and the layers brush a little past my shoulders. Stephanie Tenney did a really good job. I asked people on facebook what I should do with my hair and some people suggested shaving it off. My dad shaved his head once and got a lot of comments about how he had a good head for shaving. Maybe its genetic?... I don't think I'd ever intentionally do it, but its comforting to know if I got cancer or something I'd be able to do it lookin' soooo good.

I really need to figure out what I want. I'm over my previously mentioned infatuation. I'm being pursued from more than one direction but I've become a little cautious... Not that I haven't ever been cautious before but more than I used to be.

For now, I'm signing out. I'll dream of what I know I want. A man who'd lasso the moon so I could swallow it and moon beams would shoot out from my eyes and finger tips. A man that can be completely honest with me. A man who can work, play, make me laugh, make me feel beautiful. A man who's crazy about me. A man who understands my strengths and weaknesses and loves me anyways, who makes me believe I can be my best self. Goodnight my someone, whoever you are.

I must be hungry

So I'm number 116 on the hold list for "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" at the Provo Library. Sometimes its hard to be Jill. I put about 15 things on hold so hopefully somethings will show up sooner rather than later.

I recently realized that Samoas are about $0.25 a pop. Its too bad their so delicious or I'd never fork over the cash to buy them. The little girl on the front of the box is so cute too. Who could say no to a kid with a face like that.

Testimony

Here is the testimony that I didn't get around to bearing in church.

As of late, I've been undergoing a lot of maladies. In retrospect, I realized that all of them in their own unique ways parallel my testimony of the atonement of the Savior and things I ought to be doing to better apply it in my life.

-I went on a run down Indian Road and got lost. At one point the trail was steeper and rockier than I realized and I rolled my ankle. I could tell I had done a number to my knee and that my hip was bruised but I decided after a certain point I just needed to get up and keep running. I didn't notice how bad things were until I sat down in the car and noticed I'd torn the knee of my favorite pair of running pants. I rolled them up and was astonished at the bloody, inflamed mess. I rinsed it off with soap and water, but it wasn't until I used alcohol wipes did it stop threatening infection. The alcohol was painful, sending a firey sting across my entire leg, but the next day the swelling finally started to go down.
-My allergies were going crazy. I had blown my nose so frequently that I started having nose bleeds. I tried to convince myself it was a one day thing but it happened the following night and I finally decided it had to stop. I took my Clariten and hardly an hour later I could breath again. Even at work, where the air quality is particularly bad, my nose stayed clean. No nose bleeds, no congestion, nothing.
-I had been puking all day. My body ached, my temperature feverish, physically exhausted, famished but unable to keep anything down, rather miserable. I avoid taking medication at almost all cost but I finally decided it was time to take 2 Ibuprofin. Not long later I was able to down a few crackers and finally drift off to sleep.

I think far too often I find myself trying to make things all right. I am a strong beautiful woman of the 21st century. They say you can do anything you put your mind to and I'm often amazed at all of the things I'm able to accomplish when I do so. However, sometimes this train of thought goes too extreme. I'm running down a path with a festering wound, I'm losing blood, I can't breath, I'm starving, exhausted, dying. I keep telling myself that I shouldn't be weak, that my body needs to do what I want it to. It'll heal itself. At the most I need is a little time but I don't need anyone or anything else.

The thing is that we have the atonement. I may be frustrated with my weaknesses, my emotions, my inability to do everything I feel I should be able to, but nobody is able to execute all that with perfection. The only person to ever do so suffered, died, and overcame so that we wouldn't have to do things on our own. He is the elixir of life. He is the medicine, the Balm of Gilead. If I stopped fussing, admitted that I need something more, and actually applied the atonement more readily, I wouldn't spend so long being completely miserable and invalid.

He can heal my soul. Why am I still letting myself spiritually fester, bleed, and puke?

Criminal Activity

It feels like the sort of night one ought to participate in criminal activity. I'm dressed in my black and white striped shirt. The night is cool, dark, hushed. There is a stirring of a breeze and my heart feels restless. It shifts and skirts uneasily. It has for the last few weeks but on an evening like tonight when its so painfully quiet that you want to scream, break the calm, unleash the wild, passionate beast within. You reach that point when you need to do something out of the ordinary, reckless, potentially illegal.

Its the sort of night I'd go rob the MOA. I'd use a glass cutter and slice through the doors. I'd slip through past the gift shop full of posters, scented pens and Monet umbrellas. I'd stealthily glide through the shadows until I found something that struck my fancy. Its been a while since I've been to the MOA. I haven't seen anything except for the flaming mustache. I could steal the flaming mustache. That seems an appropriate sort of crime for a sinister individual like myself. Besides, mustaches are a mar to society. Why should BYU celebrate art that celebrates an atrocity like a mustache.

It would make an interesting movie to have an aspiring artist steal their own painting from a museum and then somehow have it anonymously recovered in hopes that it would get their art to lay claim to fame and fortune. This would be the perfect night for such a crime.

Its Thursday Night and I didn't dance, didn't play frisbee. I went to a service activity and listened to a lady talk about her health and nieces.

A Heart Full of Song, I'm Doing Everything All Wrong...

Music has always been a big part of my life. My mom taught piano, my dad is a classical music buff, I grew up in a total musical immersion. After all the violin, singing, piano, listening, I agree with the philosophy that sometimes you feel something so powerful you have to "sing what can't be said". Here are some music moments I've had recently that I thought I'd share.

"It takes a moment to fall in love, but I lifetime to learn what love is." -Jason Mraz
The tune is mediocre but I love the lyrics. I heard it for the first time on my run and replayed it two more times just so I could focus on the lyrics.

"This is how it works, you peer inside yourself, take the things you like and try to love the things you took and then you take that love you made and stick it into someone elses heart pumping someone elses blood." -Regina Spektor
I wish I could sing/play like Regina. I've lost count of how many times I've listened to "On the Radio" and the music video for "Fidelity".

"I love love. I love being in love, I don't care what it does to me." They played that song in the play I saw tonight. Its one of those happy, catchy, pick me up songs that I enjoy getting stuck in my head.

"Look how she lights up the sky, Ma belle Evangeline." Deseret got the Princess and the Frog for her birthday and I realized earlier this week how much I like that song. I wonder if I've ever "lit up the room" by entering it or smiling.

"Don't hold your breath til your face turns blue.
Its time to accept that he's not that into you.
Don't keep holding on til your old and gray.
Lifes already too short so stop wasting away.

Count all the stars in the sky until the morning's light
Go out and dance in the rain until the sun will shine
Step out from the darkness, wake up and open your eyes.
Face your life one step at a time.

You're all alone and you're feeling green
Wishin', prayin', hopin' for what might have, could have been.
Just keep on believing, keep on standing strong.
You hit the ground runnin' girl and then your gone.

chorus

Sometimes my heart bleeds like the dawn, red across the horizon.
Sometimes I want to break down and cry.
Just keep on breathing, keep on believing that someone will find you, someone will love you.
Someday soon you'll see the sun will rise.

We'll count all the stars in the sky until the morning's light
Go out and dance in the rain and I will hold you tight
I see my whole world when I see that look in your eyes
Livin' life one step at a time.

Don't hold your breath til your face turns blue.
Open your eyes and inhale."

I don't write a lot of music and I don't ever perform for other people, but this is one of the songs I've written. It seems to be a recurring theme in my life. Someday I may figure out enough piano or guitar to find an accompaniment for the tune... for now I feel at least comfortable enough to share the lyrics.

Well, that's all for now. Now for some light reading before I go to bed.

A messy night in the lab

This'll be brief since things have been busy and will continue to be busy for the rest of the night, but I just had to share how RIDICULOUS tonight has been.

First, there was a slide from a sick baby that had the most ambiguous cells I've seen in a long time. My impulse would have been to type them as granular immature monocytes but there were just enough granules that they might be sparsely granuled metacytes. The histogram supported them being metacytes but it was a mess to begin with because of the reactive lymphs and NRBCs. Yeah, I'm glad Jeralyn diffed that one...

Then Scott had a positive blood culture that had been labeled as two different patients. Treatment asap is important so you can imagine the frustration as Rob, Jeralyn, and Scott tried to determine whether the phlebotomist or the microbiologist had incorrectly labeled the bottle. I, on the other hand, was trying to keep all the ER stats going so that they'd have time to figure out what happened.

Then there was the spermy urine. 4+ sperm... Yuck. Semen Analysis happens during DAY shift (another reason why I love working nights). Next time, dear patient, save that for them next time.

Well, at least we had pizza tonight. Yummm...

Slides off the slide maker. Thats all for now. I need to keep hacking away at my SOPs in my free time anyways. : P

Love, reckless, and meaning

Things I love today:
1. Claritin. I can breath again!
2. Being up in the mountains
3. The LDS Distribution Center
4. Singing on the top of my lungs in the car with the windows rolled down
5. The wonderful people in my life

Elaborating on 2. I think I ought to work on being a little less reckless. I decided to go on a run on Indian Road today. It seems a weird spot to wander at first since its right by a busy road but once you actually get into the mountains, its beautiful. One of the problems with the trail is that there's more than one path and this is the second time I've gotten "lost" (You can't really get completely lost since the road is right there in plain sight). At the same time, I managed to take a wrong turn and twist my ankle running down a path that was steeper and slicker than I anticipated. My knee was a bloody mess and my ankle, though unsprained, is definitely bruised up. I guess I should just be grateful I didn't break my leg or anything.

So something I wanted to think about tonight is if I'm doing things in my life that are meaningful. There are plenty of things I do to keep myself busy. There are lots of things I really want to do in my life. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm filling up my time and ambition with the things that make life have meaning. Here are some things I've brainstormed that I can try to improve on.
1. My calling. I feel like I invest plenty of time trying to plan and execute activities but I know I could invest more time on more serious things like how to connect with the less involved committee members, trying to understand what the Lord wants me to learn from these experiences, etc.
2. Temple worker. I asked about potentially being a temple worker a few months ago and right after I got my calling. I think if I carefully arrange my schedule I'd feel good about asking again and be able to do EVERYTHING. I really want to have this experience...
3. Missionary work. I bought a copy of Preach My Gospel today. I've read it before but I'm going to study it more seriously and see how things go from there. I also think I might look into volunteering at the TRC, especially if the temple worker thing doesn't look possible in the immediate future.
4. Meet my Aunt Karen. My dad and his sister don't really talk. I feel like it would be worth while to at least meet her and my cousin Anthony, just to try to connect with them. They are family after all. Maybe such an effort would help bridge things between my dad and Karen. I don't know. I've e-mailed her before. Right now the game plan will be to at some point plan a trip somewhere in their general vicinity and then ask if I could have dinner with them?... We'll see.
5. Stop wasting my time. Facebook in particular. Its good to stay connected to people. Its fun to look at all the pictures and such people post but I could be doing better things with my time.
6. Serving more in the community.
7. Be a better friend.

That's a good start. I'll review this list again in a few days, along with my bucket list stuff.

Wow... thats really bloody CSF. Hopefully somebody just did a lousy job on the spinal tap... Either way, we're calling this a night.

Blood and infatuation

So apparently my assumptions about being a "its been a while" date were a little premature. I have another date on Friday. He will see I'm just as mediocre at tennis as I was with pool.

I've had two bloody noses today. I usually don't have problems with the lack of humidity here in Utah. I hardly ever need lotion to keep my skin hydrated. I only go through brief phases when I need chap-stick. These, however, are only mere inconveniences. A day or two of bloody noses when the humidity shifts is more of a frustration. Its not like you can lotion your nose to stop it from being irritated. My allergies have picked up too so the congested bloody mess in my nasal cavity is kind of gross. I just hope it won't bother me tomorrow because I really want to go on a long run on Monday.

So do you know what is more lame than a bloody nose. Unrequited infatuation. Its interesting how I can remind myself that "he's not asking me out" or "he's not going out of his way to spend time with me", yet my thoughts and emotions still go everywhere when I hear his name mentioned, see him enter the room, etc. I know I don't want anything to happen unless he is genuinely interested. I know that although he does have a lot of qualities I value, that doesn't necessarily mean things would work if he was interested. Regardless, the thoughts and emotions are still there. Stupid spring fever...

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I just looked him in the face and said I was interested. That's something Mailee would tell me to do. I know part of me wants to hear him say flat out that he's not interested and won't ever think of me as anything more than a friend. Then a more logical side of me says his actions are communicating this just as well and I need to be a big girl and get over it. BAH!

This writing exercise is my first step of admitting "I have a problem." Now I'm going to stop mulling about this whole situation and read about "Crucial Conversation Tools". G'night.

Biking

I took a bike ride to Utah Lake today. I didn't bother to take my MP3 with me so I was left to my thoughts and I realized how extremely nostalgic I am... or maybe I just have lived in Provo too long. Either way, here is a brief overview of some of the thoughts I had along the trail.

-I passed by lots of ducks swimming in the river. Among them was the "Ugly Duck". Many of us grew up being told ugly ducklings (or cygnets) grew up to be swans. In at least one situation, I can safely say, it just isn't true. He is simply an ugly duck. He has a feathery cyst or mass or... something. Maybe its normal for the variety of ducks? I don't know. Either way, he's a resident of the river trail I usually notice when I bother to go to or past the duck pond.

-I saw a chickadee chirruping on the trail and it made me think of a report I wrote in 2nd grade about them. They still have a special place in my heart because of that paper. If I was a Disney Princess I'd probably want a swarm of them around to do my bidding instead of squirrels and mice (who spread all sorts of bacterial pathogens. Who'd want them cleaning the kitchen, seriously).

-I thought about one of my last dates with my first boyfriend. We managed to get halfway down the trail until his tire popped and we had to turn around a go back. This was before I had really explored the trail thoroughly enough to learn it went down to the lake.

-On another date I went canoeing down the river. The wind blew the canoe everywhere and halfway through the date Will called me. Its awful distracting to notice you're getting a phone call from your latest crush when you're on a date with somebody else. Then Will proved to be a jerk. Moving along.

-On yet another date I remember having a picnic, finding a frying pan in a nearby stream, discovering there were leaches in the stream and jumping out rather quickly, and hiking in the river upstream... I've been on a lot of dates. For some reason as I've been typing I'm realizing that it really has been A LOT more than I realized. I would hardly have believed in high school. I didn't have my first date until a month before I left for college.

-Once I got to the lake I skipped rocks for a while. On the Southeastern corner of the bay there are large flat rocks, some the size of dinner plates. I've managed to get to about 4 skips but usually I can only manage one or two before the stone sinks into the brown salty waves. Despite its turbid dirty color, the sunshine looked particularly lovely on the lake. It sparkled in a brilliant, delicate way, like diamond lace (if such a thing is possible.)

-One time I went kayaking with some roommates and friends. One guy's brother had come for a visit and later moved into my ward. He met a girl, was crazy about her, she went on and came back from a mission, and he's still crazy about her (they're just dating as far as I know). It makes me hopeful when I see someone love a girl with that sort of determined passion.

-I've become a "its been a while" sort of date. I'm that girl that guys go out with once, forget about, and then a month or so later, when something with another girl has flopped, they remember me, give me a call, and plan a date. I don't know what about me has inspired this pattern but its happened with about 4 different guys since November. Am I doing something to encourage this or do I just attract "its been a while" sorts of men?

Dying

So yesterday I was the sickest I've been in a VERY long time. How sick you say?

I went to the temple with Gabi yesterday. We used to go together every week and I was really excited to be going with her again that afternoon. I was a little "meh" but that's normal when I wake up before noon during my week on. So we drove up to the temple for the 12pm session.

Half way through the session I could tell something was up. I was still feeling "meh"ish but it wasn't just me being tired. I remembered my breakfast of a granola bar and a Milky Way bar and how half way through the Milky Way I lost my appetite. I suddenly realized I probably had caught something from my roommates. Holly in particular had been vomiting all night. I squirmed uncomfortably in my seat and prayed I wouldn't puke in the middle of the session.

Well, I made it to the Celestial room and proceeded to walk out just as fast as I walked in. I could feel it. I was going to barf. The entire contents of my stomach would be all over my temple clothes, the Celestial room, or both if I didn't find a restroom quick. I didn't make it to a restroom. However, I did find a drinking fountain. I felt relieved I didn't get vomit on the temple carpets, my temple clothes, or have to dash out in the middle of the session. I say its one of the Lord's tender mercies.

Yesterday I tossed and turned and barfed until 4am. I even called in sick from work which I don't think I'd ever have considered doing if I hadn't puked up everything I'd eaten earlier that night at 7pm. Yuck, yuck, yuck...

On a happier note, the ward activity (Mocktail/Open Mic Night) tonight seemed to go well. My calling often makes me feel frustrated, particularly the fact that I've never had more than 3 committee members at a single activity at the same time. I've been really pushing to try to get things functional but since I was out of town last weekend, I was paranoid that things were going to flop. Fortunately, people showed up, the drinks were tasty, the music was good, and things seemed to go okay.

One of my favorite parts of the night was when Megan told a story (she's in a story telling class right now), about the Bremen Musicians. My grandparents are German and lived in Bremen part of their lives. I've grown up on the story. At multiple points during the tale, Megan paused and went "I'm not sure this is a very good children's story..." (Comparable to some of the original Grim's fairytales). I guess this is one of the many reasons I'm as messed up as I am, eh?

So there was that story I wanted to write. Here is my attempts to formulate the general idea... once I get that written down it'll be easier to create characters that are credible.

All of us want to feel loved. Its one of the universal needs that all of us search for, crave for our entire lives. But what if every time you realized you truly loved someone, tragedy struck and they, for some reason or another, would leave you in exactly 1 year. A new flame. A new career opportunity. Amnesia. Car accident. Insanity. ETC. Would you go for the "Better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all." approach or would you want to spare everyone the agony altogether?

That's the overall concept.

The main character will be at a point in her life where she is "done with love". She pushes people away, converts to a hermetic lifestyle to avoid hurting the people she would assuredly care about, and tries to keep herself occupied with things like music, nature, work, etc. The plot develops as she meets a guy who insists on getting to know her better (for some reason or another... I'll figure that out later). As their relationship grows, she realizes she is falling in love and despite all her attempts to sabotage things, things keep moving forward. At some point she decides that she should stop fighting things. Its too late. She loves him. His fate is doomed. She might as well embrace things and make it last.

I don't know when it would be appropriate to throw in the plot twist... At some point we learn that he has cancer (or something else... terminally ill). Things were going to be terminal well before they met each other. Somehow, he has managed to live months past his "death date". The doctors can't understand why. He dies a year and a day past the "I love you" moment. As it turns their love sustained his life rather than diminished it.

Well, I guess that's all for now. I clearly have a lot to work on if things will ever go anywhere. It'll take a lot of work to keep things from getting depressing if people are dying so frequently. I'll have to try to make it humorous enough and move through the depressing stuff in such a way that you have time to dwell on it but it doesn't become the focus of the writing. The overall message is that love is a gift that makes life beautiful and worth living. Fear of heartbreak, death, etc. keeps us from truly living and truly loving. We should seize the day and take advantage of what little time we have.... I was going to wrap that up better but...

Speaking of a lack of time, the morning run has started. Back to work with me!!

Rexburg, Bucket Lists, etc.

Another late night for Ms. Jill Christine Schuler. My roommate is snoring on the couch. Its kinda distracting... When I was younger I would pinch my dad's nose when he snored. This would force him to breath through his mouth or roll over. I don't feel like I could use this strategy on my roommate. It was awkward enough during the one or two times that my dad woke up with me grabbing his nose....

Rexburg was wonderful. I have a photo album on facebook so I'll spare myself the hassle of posting pictures. My adventures swimming, snowboarding, kite-flying, picnicking, etc. were definitely worth the cost of gas money and a few lonely hours driving. Its interesting wondering what my life would have been like if I had gone to BYUI. BYU is very similar to BYUI but the cultures certainly have their differences (for better or for worse). I think its safe to say that I'd have a good time with Deseret just about anywhere. She should move to Provo...

So I went snowboarding for the first time last weekend which made me think of my bucket list which made me go crazy this afternoon and brainstorm for my current bucket list. I don't think I'll post my whole list here but I'll put some highlights of things I want to take care of from my bucket list first.
1. Grand Canyon- Jessi wants to go. I figure it would be very doable to take a trip this summer sometime.
2. Go Scuba Diving in Hawaii- Nate Lowe took a scuba class last semester and it sounded interesting. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii. Combining the two goals would be a way to perpetuate the plan and make things really happen.
3. Write a book- I had an idea for a book the other day which I thought would be interesting. I would need to develop my ideas more fully before I could even consider really starting to write. I also want to write a kid's book (the book idea I have currently been thinking about wouldn't work for a kid's book). I have a knack for verbal story telling. It think it would be fun to hear what a publisher would say about my work if I wrote something down and sent it in.

These'll be good starters for now. I have a long list but these stuck out as things I could definitely work on during the next few months. Lets see where things take me. : )

Jane Eyre

So today I was talking with my coworker Laureen about our dating lives (a usual topic for us). At one point she declared we'd find our "Mr. Rochesters". I thought it was an interesting thing to say.

For those of you who have read Jane Eyre know that Mr. Rochester's relationship with Jane isn't really healthy. He is passionately in love with Jane but so determined to be with her that he deceives her and manipulates her emotions. Not really things I'd ever want for anyone in a relationship. Jane, being the virtuous and fantastic character that she is, leaves him but towards the end of the book she hears his voice cry for hers in a vision and returns to find out things have changed and they get married.

I guess Mr. Rochester learns his lesson of the mercy of God and is put in a position where he can be the sort of man you want him to be the entire book. However, one can't help but wonder what would have happened if Jane had met more men and dated around. Sure, she may not have met someone as violently in love with her as Mr. Rochester, but whose to say she couldn't? Just because her cousin wasn't in love with her doesn't mean she couldn't find someone else who could.

Well, I've got a positive blood culture. Back to work with me!

Poop, Idaho, and Goals

Tonight I got a call from ER from a guy asking if we had run a Fecal WBC count on one of his patients. As we closed the phone call he said "That poop is the only thing keeping me from going home." That's not something you hear every day. Not something I like hearing since it means I have to go back to micro and run the test. Poop is gross. Other sick peoples' poop redefines that word.

So I'm kind of excited for this Wednesday since I'm taking a road trip to Rexburg to visit my best friend, Deseret Scott. She fits into that category of people that is always up for an adventure and can make me laugh so hard that my abs get sore. So far here is our to do list:
1. Snowboarding
2. Go to the movies
3. Swimming (they have an indoor pool)
4. Dancing
5. Make and eat pies for Pi Day
6. Do "stuff"
Its going to be awesome. I mentioned in my last post how I'd been feeling restless and I think getting out of Provo is just what the doctor ordered.

I think the other cure for that is for me to revamp my personal goals. I've been taking voice lessons and training for a half marathon but I haven't really focused on too much else as of late. This is me brainstorming things to add to my bucket list. If anyone ever does start to read this they can feel free to add suggestions as well. In case you haven't noticed, I'm using this more like a public journal anyways.
1. Garden. I had snap peas last summer but I think I want something that'll hold out a little later in the season. Maybe some cherry tomatoes. I probably need to consult Aaron about that...
2. Grand Canyon? CA? Vegas? There are a lot of places I want to travel to and I want to make better use of my spring/summer and actually travel to these places. Hopefully I won't have to travel solo but I'm holding to my "if you wait for people to come with you you'll NEVER get to see anything" motto. At some point I'll make a more detailed list of places I could easily visit in a week.
3. Scuba Diving
4. Write a children's book
5. Write a song

mEH... work happened so this entry will have to be continued another time. I definitely had 2 FWBC tests tonight.

I loaded the tommy with mallows...

So on Wednesday I broke into my ex-boyfriend's house and commandeered a suitcase of guns... Marshmallow guns to be specific. I might have been coached through the whole process by his mother. Nice woman, despite the fact she tried to sabotage our relationship. The ironic thing is that this whole situation didn't feel terribly awkward. Maybe I'm just awkward so being in "awkward" situations doesn't phase me.

Today I was in charge of a "Marshmallow Gun Capture the Flag" Ward Activity which went really well... Well, except for my lack of knowledge about using a scheduled stake center. It would have been valuable to know that I'd need to have someone unlock the building... and the kitchen. Then I forgot the hot chocolate which proved to be futile since cups and hot water were only going to be available in the kitchen. The optimist in me would like to point out that despite the lack of hot chocolate, people still had fun. The definition of fun includes hitting Danny Deurden in the head with a marshmallow from well over halfway across the parking lot. Fun also included getting to flirt with a Home Depot guy when I went to make additional marshmallow weaponry.

Have you ever felt this strong desire to express yourself but not really have a method or outlet to really communicate what you feel. Some people are naturally gifted musicians, writers, etc. and create in a beautiful, profound, striking way. I enjoy singing and playing the violin. I enjoy writing. However, my enjoyment isn't equivalent to having the ability to really express everything going on in my head. I guess I shouldn't downplay the skills I do have but I really need to get this restless, passionate, dissatisfied feeling out of my system.

Well, back to saving lives. I really do love my job. Win!

Alexander Riley

So facebook has the "suggested friends" section and today it happened to show a familiar face I hadn't dwelt on in a while.

As the story goes, I was at a new low in my dating life. Few prospects, no dates, things were slow, I was frustrated. To cope, I did what any rational 21 year old girl would do. I made up a boyfriend.

His name was Alexander Riley, inspired by Alder Riley's syndrome (I'd been studying in hematology a little too long). Alexander was a fine specimen of my creative mind. He was an aspiring young Med student determined to become a Pediatrician. He was planning on volunteering at clinics in third world countries, particularly orphanages. Alexander was a great outdoors-man, loving camping, biking, most sports in general. He was funny, kind, nerdy, churchy, and musical. Since I'm a firm believer that there's no such thing as a perfect person, I decided he should probably like country music. Handsome and virtuous, thoughts of Alexander consoled me in my singledom.

Then, one fine day I met Alexander, or rather, a man who was the living incarnate of my fictional lover. We met at a YSA fireside and dinner. He was tall, dark, handsome, a Med Student aspiring to go into pediatrics, funny, spiritual, outdoorsy... Our eyes briefly met during the fireside and afterward he came straight up to me to introduce himself. We only talked for 15 minutes so we never got around to discussing tastes in music but needless to say I was smitten. I figured someday I could move back to Minnesota, marry "Alexander", and save orphans. It sounded like a good plan.

However, plans change. I never did move back to Minnesota. Dreams of Alexander soon dissolved as other boys and fancies filled my girlish mind. However, sometimes I can't help but wonder what would have happened if fate had brought the two of us together... Guess I'll have to keep trying to conquer the world solo 'til someone not imaginary comes charging into my life.

Well, its about time I started hunting for Uric Acid Crystals in this synovial fluid. : )

Stupid frustration, Star Trekking, and Long Days

This last weekend was... interesting. Not quite what I had envisioned but I guess it worked.

It started last week when my brother Jeff invited me to go snowboarding with him. There wasn't a set day or time but he said I could come along. I guess he didn't think I really meant it when I said "okay, let me know what time you'll be going. I'll plan on it." Thursday night he calls to say they'll be going on Friday afternoon. Friday morning he tells me his friend turned it into a group date and I wouldn't want to go. I told him to find me a date or deal with the fact it might be awkward for him. Friday afternoon he told me he had lied and that his friends didn't want to have to deal with a slow girl and their carpooling car was full. Needless to say, I was a little upset. 1. I was looking forward to snowboarding. 2. Honesty is in my top five attributes of what I look for in any relationship and it bothers me my own brother doesn't think its that important.

Thankfully, I had backup plans for Friday night (kudos to Jackie Warner and facebook Frisbee Group). I decided night Frisbee was probably more fun than falling down a mountain with my brothers friends, who, if they inspire my brother to lie, are probably not the sorts of people I'd want to be around anyways. Boys who play Frisbee, however, automatically earn themselves 20 extra points in life. Jackie and I followed Frisbee with a dance party.

Can I just put out there that Jackie Warner is fantastic. She is the sort of person who'd go TPing with me, fly a kite in the middle of snowstorm, wrestle a bear, etc. because she has a solid sense of adventure, likes to have fun, etc. All and all she is my type of person. Plus, she makes me laugh. I imagine if I spent too much time with her she might make me laugh to the point where my abs would get sore.

Saturday I went with a group of people to a Star Trek Simulation. I was a little nervous, considering I know close to squat about the show. However, despite my lack of knowledge, I had a lot of fun. We didn't complete the mission, but I did get to shoot space pirates with a phaser. Its not every weekend you get to do that. Afterward a group of us went to a restaurant called Hot Pot which was neat. They have a giant pot of boiling broth and you cook your own meat. It was delicious, though pricey and time consuming enough I wouldn't want to go their too frequently.

Sunday was a zoo. I had three things to do. 1) Stake Conference, 2) VTing, 3) Activities Committee Meeting. You would think it would be pretty straightforward getting everything done. I got it done, to be sure, but half of my morning was spent trying to reschedule things, trying to figure out a way to get everything done. Imagine trying to juggle a monkey, baby alligator, and an egg and that's basically what it felt like I was doing. Good thing I didn't work this week.

Well, I've got places to go, people to see. I don't think anyone has started reading this yet... I don't know if I care if anyone really does. However, if you do, have a lovely day.
